A BULLHORN'S SOUND brought Emily to reality as a man was signaling to set a stage near the gazebo in the town square. The powers in Marie-Glen decided that the fundraiser would be in the middle of all the small shops circling in the area. She found herself on her knees with her hands clenched together, unwilling to stand back up. Emily wondered if she had recently been so far out of the loop. Could an event such as this have passed her by without her knowing? Emily always checked the town's website for all local activities and made it a priority to go. Not because she wanted to necessarily, but because she liked the idea of being seen and known by others. Crosby didn't have the same sentiment as his fiancée as he found it best to be in the shadows and keep the friends you already have instead of making fake ones.
Clack-clack-clack-clack-clack. That sound was back again, louder than it had ever been before. Emily didnât know where it was coming from but was sure she could find it. Moving her head right to the left, narrowing in on the location, and pointing her ears toward the sound, Emily eventually closed her eyes again. She focused her hearing on the terrible noises. It's coming from the right.
Bringing her head up, Emily looked to her right side. It was coming from the same direction as the elementary school. There was a wooded area down the street before one would reach the school if they were walking or driving, and nine children stood between the trees. They were glowing. Maybe not glowing. The children had a dim, white hue surrounding them. Emily couldnât tell who they were as the kids observed Emily from afar. She didn't recognize them, but most people wouldn't be able to from that far away, to be fair. Still, something was unnerving about them.
"I have been in that apartment too long," Emily said to herself, "I need to get out and go to the store or something." Emily walked back into her apartment to find her purse. After much searching and belting out numerous expletives from frustration, the only thing she could see was her matching wallet that went with it. Emily remembered that last day, realizing she had brought her purse to school but left her bag. She remembered being mad the previous day because she couldn't buy a cup of overpriced coffee.
Emily investigated the antique shop to find her landlord, Claire, asleep at the cash register while walking down the stairs again. The day for her was coming to an end. Bless her heart; she's so old. It's getting close to bed for her. The radio was still blaring throughout the shop. Emily took a moment to forget the outside world and found the time to walk into the store and turn down the volume. She debated whether she should wake her, but Claire looked so peaceful and comfortable that Emily didn't have the heart.
